  • Riding Quote of the Week

Success is the sum of small efforts repeated day in and day out-Robert Collier
  • Favorite Exercise of the Week

One stride, two stride, one stride.

~Ever have a refusal because your horse just lacked the stamina to save you over a fence? Have a horse put in too many or too little strides? Here is a really good exercise to get you and your horse under control and build that stamina.

    1. Make sure that you have a grounds-person to help you with these
    2. Set up two fences as a one stride, but make the distance a long one stride
    3. Practice going over the two fences pushing for that one stride.
    4. Once you and your horse have mastered the one stride, sit back and make it a two stride. Go back and forth between one and two strides.

-This will help cue your horse in on your aides, help you learn how to effectively use your aides, and then also build up your horse's abs and hind quarters.

-Too easy??? set up one fence as a vertical and the other as an oxer, do the same exercise in both directions!

~Remember to take into account your horse's size (pony/horse) for changes in distance-it's always helpful to have someone on the ground who can help you make the adjustments.

  • Riding Notes/Tips For the Week

***Make sure that horses and riders are well taken care of before, during, and after rides. Its going to be hot this week, so make sure that you are monitoring horses sweat, water intake, and breathing throughout rides. It's a good week to give baths!

  • ~Sunday: Make sure that horses get atleast one days rest throughout the week-they need a mental and physical break as much as riders do!
  • ~Monday: The beginning of the week! Stay focused on your goals and only HARD WORK will pay off-so make sure you have plans for each ride this week
  • ~Tuesday(77):Be sure to check horse's shoes and legs! Thunderstorms from last night will have left the grass wet all night and that's not good for shoes! Also check for rain rot/rain scald/streptothricosis and girth itch. Because Virginia has high heat and high humidity mixed with rain from last night, it is more likely to spread from horse to horse
  • ~Wednesday(82): Its going to be wet today so make sure to check your horse's shoes/hooves to make sure nothing is coming loose. Jumping is probably a no-go today so get some flatwork/ groundwork in with your teammates!
  • ~Thursday(91): The wet weather is gone and now the sun is out! Its going to be hot today so make sure horses are well cared for! This also means that flies/bugs are going to be out lurking so equip yourselves with enough fly spray. Try adding some garlic to your horse's feed to help deter unwanted pests. We suggest using a mixture of garlic salt, 1 tbsp/feeding
  • ~Friday(93): Another hot day so make sure your horses get plenty of breaks-riders too! If possible ride in an indoor-a great way to work on dressage! Remember if you are trailering to Surefire today to take plenty of electrolytes and water for you and your horses and open up the vents!
  • ~Saturday(90): Its show day for B.E.T. riders! Good luck to teammates competing and remember to drink lots of water and get your protein in. -Those not showing should take advantage of the 3 degree drop in weather and give horse's their mental break on a nice cool trail ride! If you and your horse are in working mode, use the trails to condition horses. Having something other than an indoor or outside arena to look at can really put a pep in your horse's step!
